THE COLONELS PLAY FOR THE KENTUCKY SENATE

Feb. 15, 2006

KY. Colonel Tim May and KY. Colonel Dan Knowles performed for the Ky. State Senate. They were there at the invitation of Senator Dan Kelly, Majority Leader to introduce the Senate to their Kentucky Derby song SUNRISE AT THE DOWNS. After being introduced to the Senate floor by Senate President David Williams, whose only request was not to play any Led Zeppelin on the banjo, they performed Home Sweet Home, which received a standing ovation. This was followed by some of Dan's soon to be patented banjo jokes. Sunrise was then introduced and performed to another standing ovation.  Kentucky Educational Television filmed the event for later release.

Sunrise at the Downs was written by Turfway Track Historian Jim Claypool along with Tim May and Dan Knowles. The song is the expression of  the feelings and excitement which are felt at Churchill Downs on Derby Day. This tune has been performed many times and has always received high praise. Dan and Tim are currently planning to record Sunrise at the Downs for a upcoming horse racing CD.
